February is known as Dental Health Month. I usually do a week long unit with dental health. We learned about the importance of brushing our teeth, seeing the dentist two times a year and some foods that are good/bad for our teeth.
Here are some pictures of the Kindergartners brushing some 'teeth.' Before they started brushing them I showed them what the teeth would look like if we didn't brush our teeth. I used white hard boiled eggs and soaked them in a dark pop (you can use any dark liquid for this). The dark liquid stains the white egg.
While brushing they realized that it takes a while for the egg to get white. Which led us to discussing how your teeth can't be white after one brushing, it takes time which is why it is so important to brush our teeth two times a day.
Dotting our 'toothy' sight words.
Our teeth and handwriting craft for the week.
In Science we are starting to learn about what is all in our sky. We first started to learn about clouds. I didn't really go into detail with the names of them or made sure they knew what each name was. They were introduced to the names, but we focused more on how clouds look different from each other and are placed either high or low in our sky.
Our cloud adjective chart.
Making our clouds with water colors. I told them to make those 'wispy thin' clouds and asked them where they would go. They knew exactly where to put them: high in the sky.
Center work: stamping out the middle sounds of words.
Center Work: Identifying which number is less than or greater than ten.
Center time: ABC Mouse
After learning about clouds we then moved onto learning about our Sun and Moon. We read the book "Mooncake" by Frank Asch. It is about a bear who thinks he went to the moon and tried a piece of the moon. He thought he was eating mooncake but it ending up being something else. I don't want to spoil the book for you :). We listed some adjectives about what they think mooncake would taste like.
I made them some mooncake to try. It was thawed vanilla ice cream mixed with thawed lemonade concentrate. You mix them together and then freeze them again.
Some of them really enjoyed it and some didn't.
