We are FIRED up for Safety!!

This week was another fun and busy week.
Here the Kindergartners are deep in thought at writing -at words on our bats!

Our letter of the week was the letter Ss.  We are turning our letter Ss into spiders!

One of our Halloween crafts were candy corn bats!

Here are our spiders when they were all finished.

We not only learned about fire safety, we learned about Christopher Columbus.  We learned that he accidentally came to America, but it was a good thing he did!  We also learned that he had three ships:  The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.  We made the ship Nina.

Here the Kindergartners are writing some Ss words onto strips.  They will use these strips to glue onto our snake.  We made a Striped S Word Snake!

One of our sight words was the word: purple.  We read the story: Harold and the Purple Crayon.  After reading we reviewed the purple items we saw in the book, then we each got to draw two things that were purple.  The Kindergartners didn't know what our picture would be like until we were done with gluing our purple pictures on.  Once we had the purple pictures on, I then drew the stem and leaf.  Once I did that, they all shouted "We made grapes!"  WOOHOO!! :)

Making some chalk ghosts for our door.

We learned about leaves and how they change.  We also learned what comes first, next and last.  After we read a story about leaves and how they change, we wrote the life of a leaf.  The leaf pictures are actually leaf rubbings.  My camera didn't show the rubbings as well as I hoped they would.

Here the Kindergartners are doing some sight word rainbow writing. This is one of their favorites because they get to write in markers!!

Center work:  working on color identification and color words.

This week we also learned about fire safety and who firefighters are!  We discussed what to do if there was a fire in our classroom.  We stop, drop to the floor and start to crawl to a safe exit to get out of the room.  We also learned how to touch the door and what to do if they feel heat coming from the door - we find a new way to get out safely.

Firefighters are our friends! That is one thing we talked about every day!  We saw pictures of what firefighters looked like before they put on their bunker gear and after.  Even though they look different, they are still our friends and are here to help us!

Here is an anchor chart we filled out about our heroes: firefighters.

We have been learning to graph - so on Fun Friday we did some M & M Math to help with color identification, counting and graphing! They said the best part of Math that day was they got to eat candy!!

Since we learned about letter Ss, we read a story about a silly scarecrow.  To go with our book and to have another fall craft we made scarecrows!

Our chalk ghosts on our door.

Happy Halloween!!!

This week was a scary-spooky fun filled week for the Kindergartners!  We read lots of stories about Halloween, pumpkins, bats, ghosts, goblins and monsters!  Our letter of the week was the letter Ss.  We started off reading a story called:  Spookly the Square Pumpkin.   A great story that not only has the letter Ss in it but also teaches children never to judge someone by how they look or because they are different.

We did an art project on making pumpkins.  The Kindergartners were allowed to make any shape and size of pumpkin they wanted to.  Here they are painting their pumpkins.

While letting them dry, we learned and identified Ss words.  We made quite a list!

One of our sight words was purple.  We read the story Harold and the Purple Crayon.  After reading the story we listed some things that could be purple.  They each got two white squares and had to draw two things that were purple.  They then glued them onto a purple circle.  I told that that we were going to use these circles and build something giant that is purple.  They thought it was a large triangle until I added the stem and leaf.  After that they all shouted:  GRAPES!!

Working on some centers:  identifying shapes

In Science we learned about pumpkins  and their life cycle.  We first brainstormed how we think pumpkins grow.  There were quite a few students who know the steps but not in the correct order - I was very impressed.  After we read the story we put the pumpkin life cycle in order.

Here are our pumpkins all finished.

Math Centers: rolling a pumpkin

Math Centers: counting the stickers and writing the numbers

We learned the word family: at.   After reading our -at phonics story we listed -at words.  After that we made some bats with some -at words on them.

Our Frankenstein crafts.

A few weeks ago we learned about ocean animals and homes.  The Kindergartners had some homework to do.  We read the story: A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle.  They had to come up with a new shell for hermit crab.  They turned out really good!

Using the SMARTboard and making some pumpkin faces.

Sequencing a story: The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything

The only two girl Kindergartners looking absolutely cute in their costumes!
