100th Day Hooray!

It has been crazy these last two weeks.  During these last two weeks, we have learned two letters: Hh and Ll, we learned about the seasons, celebrated our 100th day of school, talked about Groundhogs Day and did our Three Little Pigs unit. 

Hh is for house.  

In Science we learned about the four seasons.  We did one season a day during our week.  In each season they had to think about the things that they can do, see or what happens in that season.  Their ideas were then wrote on our Season charts.

We retold our Three Little Pigs story by drawing the houses that matched each pig. 

They then had to imagine they were a pig building a house.  What would you build your house out of - straw, sticks or bricks?

Most of them choose bricks.  

We learned about Groundhogs Day and what it means if Phil sees his shadow or not.  We had a class poll on if we think he will see his shadow or not.  The ones with blue construction paper behind their writing said that Phil will not see his shadow and the ones with yellow thought he will see his shadow. 

This week we celebrated our 100th day!  They had to come up with a picture using 100 items.  They all did a wonderful job!  Very creative.

They each got 10 strips and had to dot paint 10 dots on each strip - making 100 dots!

Can you finish your lollipop in 100 licks?  A little math game we did recognizing our numbers while eating a sucker! 

To end our Three Little Pigs unit we did a STEM challenge.  They had to build a house that wouldn't get blown down by the wolf aka Mrs. Bartling's blow dryer! 

They all did a wonderful job designing their houses.  They all stayed up for the wolf except for one house.   That one house that fell down- the Kinder stated that they knew what they needed to do to fix it.  They fixed it and WAHLA - it didn't blow down!  

We have a dream!!!

I can't believe that January is almost over and that this is the first time I have posted in 2015! I apologize for lack of posting, we just have been super duper busy in Kindergarten.  Before I start on this post, I want to brag about my Kinders first :).  They are becoming magnificent little readers.  I have some students who are reading more challenging books in the classroom and we also have learned 53 sight words!  They are blending letters together very well to try to figure out those bigger and new words!  I am so proud of them.  

This week we have been working with the letter Hh.  We listed some Hh words on our chart.  We then cut our and colored a horse with some hay stacks.  On each of the hay stacks they had to draw an Hh word.  They were feeding their horses hay stack Hh words.

We learned about a man who changed the lives of some people, Martin Luther King Jr.  We read some stories about him and then talked about what he did to help others, as well as the dream he had.  I do this every year with my classes, because it's a great way to show how we are all the same.  I had a brown and white egg.  We talked about how they looked different from each other and then we cracked them.  To our surprise they looked the exact same!  This helps teaches that it doesn't matter what we look like on the outside, we are the same on the inside. 

A story that I read with the Kindergartners was "The Crayon Box that Talked."  Before we read the story, I had them get 1 crayon out.  I told them what to draw on the paper but they could only use that one color they choose.  We talked about how our pictures looked like.  I got a lot of 'it's not pretty' and 'it looks boring.'

We read the story and talked about how the crayons didn't like each other because they were all different colors.  At the end the story when the little girl was done drawing the picture, the crayons realized that they made a beautiful picture working together and using all the different colors.   I sent them back to their seats and told them to draw the same picture using all different colors.  

For some handwriting, we reviewed Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream that he had.  We listed some dreams we would have to make things fair and have everyone get along.  They thought of some great dreams.  Here are the writings along with our Martin Luther King Jr. craft.

As well as learning about MLK Jr., we also learned about the seasons and how they change.  We did a finger paint craft to help show how the trees look in each season.
