Kindergarten Under the Sea!!!

These last two weeks have been super busy for the Kindergartners!  We have been learning about the ocean and the animals that live in it, learning what mammals are, working with letter Ss, -at and -an words to name a few!

One of our sight words for the couple weeks was: have.  Here is our 'have' poem.  They each got a copy of this poem to put in their journals.  They also had to circle all the haves and draw a picture of a person.

Our sight word 'is' poem.  They had to circle all the 'is' words and then draw a picture of one of the fruits or vegetables from the poems.

We have been working on learning what a noun is: person, place, thing or animal.  We learned which noun showed more than one.

 '
Writing nouns from our noun chart.

One of our color words was: purple.  We brainstormed some purple items and then they had to draw one.  We put them all together and made a purple grape!

One of our ocean books we read was "Commotion in the Ocean."  This book is filled with poems about ocean animals.  Each Kindergartner had to choose a poem that they wanted for me to type up. Then they had to put that poem in their journal and draw a picture of their ocean animal.

Another purple activity we did revolved around the book: Harold and the Purple Crayon.  We made a class book and named it: Kindergarten and the Purple Crayon.  Each kindergartner made their own page for our class book.

We worked with -at words.  We brainstormed a lot of -at words.  Since bat is an -at word, we made bats and wrote on them with white crayon our -at words from our chart.

Working on some math centers.  Roll a sunflower.

 Center time working with syllables.

Center time working with writing our letters.

Making ocean animals with play dough during center time.

Another -at activity we did was we read the book:  Rat-a-tat-tat.  We then made houses to see who was at our door to go with our story.

Since we learned about oceans and the animals that lived there, one of our animals we learned about were sharks!  Here is our anchor chart with facts about sharks that we learned about.

They got to make their own shark craft and write one sentence about a fact about sharks that they learned.

Our water colored coffee filter fish that we made.

We made a human letter Ss.

To go along with the letter Ss, we put our scarecrow poem into our journals and then circled all the letter Ss in our poem.  I drew a scarecrow on the board and they had to use the same colors that I did to draw their scarecrow.  They did very well on following directions!

In social studies we have been learning about homes.  We learned that there are many different types of homes and not everyone lives in the same type of home.  We also learned how homes and schools have many different rooms.  We made our own homes and cut out pictures from magazines.  The pictures that they cut out had to be pictures that they would put in their rooms.  They had to have a picture of a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen, and a family room.  Once they had those pictures, they then got to choose what else they wanted to go in their houses.

Another ocean animal that we learned about were crabs!  We spent the day walking from place to place like crabs, sideways!
Here are our crabby crab crafts!

Sight word poem:  little

Working with -an words.  We brainstormed some -an words  They each got a picture with an opened can on it.  They had to write four -an words popping out of their can.

Some got creative and wanted a tomato soup can!

Working with our sight word number seven.

We started one our our Halloween crafts.  They each had to bring a shape to school.  We discussed and identified the shapes that were brought and then went around the room to see if we could find those shapes else where.  I asked them what shape starts with the letter Ss and they said SQUARE!  So we made our craft using only colored squares!

Here are our candy corn crafts that we made using only squares!

This week was also fire safety week.  We talked about the importance of being safe when around a campfire and how to not play with matches.  We went over our schools' fire drill procedure and what to do if there is a fire in our own homes.
We even practiced: stop, drop and roll!
Here we are practicing!

We read three books about firefighters.  We used these books to fill out our fire fighters anchor chart.

For our writing activity, they had to write one sentence from our fire fighter chart.

Along with our handwriting activity of writing a sentence about fire fighters, they each got to make a fire fighter to go with their writing!
Here is our hallway display of our fire fighters!
