Buggy for Spring!!

This week the preschoolers started off by 'bugging' around.  It was insect week!  Even though I am not a big fan of those creepy crawling things, the preschoolers sure are!! :)   Classifying which what a bug or insect is hard for them to understand because every creepy little crawling things is a bug! I kept it simple with them and we sorted what were bugs/insects and what were not.  We started off the week by learning that an insect has three body parts (in reference we used ourselves: we have a head, tummy and tushy - just like insects), six legs, can fly and have antennae aka ears.   We used egg cartons which work amazing to help teach this because of the three separate body parts.  Here are some of their insects that they made.  We did clarify that spiders are not insects because they did not have six legs, they have eight legs like an octopus! I love how they compare different animals with each other!

We next made some name bugs!  They wrote their letters of their name by themselves. They turned out super cute!

Here is one of our bulletin boards in the classroom to go right along with our bug theme!

On Wednesday we learned about a type of bug that buzzed their way around!  We learned about those wonderful bees!! We talked about how flowers make pollen which is a power stuff.  That powder stuff got stuck onto the bees' feet and they went from flower to flower.  I think after I said the word pollen I lost them. Why not show them with Cheetos!! They played with their Cheetos and rolled them around their hands. They got those lovely orangey colored hands and fingers.  They then understood what pollen was and how it stuck to the bees.  Of course we couldn't let a bag of Cheetos just sit there.  We had it with our snack for the day.
Here are some pictures of our 'pollen' hands!

We next made our bee craft.  They started off with a yellow oval and had some masking tape stripes on it. they painted the whole oval black and we let it dry for a little bit.

After letting it dry we then tore off the pieces of tape to get our black and yellow stripped bees!

Here are our bees when the there all done with!  Some of them were girl bees and had some eyelashes put on!  Super duper cute!

The one on the right had a black eye.  He said that it got into a fight with another bee.  They were trying to still his pollen!  :)

We were planned to have a full week of preschool but the weather decided that it wasn't going to be in our favor.  On Friday we were going to learn about  butterflies but since it snowed the day/night before we ended up having a late start which equals no preschool. :(  We will still do our butterfly crafts next week while we learn about flowers.  So come back next week to see those butterfly crafts!  Have a great week!
