Merry Christmas! 2015

I am sorry for this long post.  I like to post all what we do in December in one post because #1.  We do a lot of different things in December.  #2.  It goes by way to fast.   and #3.  We are super busy having fun!

Our Kindergarten elf came this year.  His name is Buddy.  He came at the beginning of the month to watch over the Kindergartners.

The note that he left for us.

Buddy has his own book about himself!  He gave it to us when he came so we can read it and learn a little bit more about him!

One of the many stories we read this month was "The Mitten."  We discussed the animals that tried to squeeze into the mitten, sequenced the story, identified if the story was real or make believe and also charted our favorite animal in the story.

Sorting the characters that were in the book and not in the book.

One of our reading stories was:  "Whose Garden Is It?"  We listed the types of things that grow in the garden and how to take of them.  We read a story called "Growing Vegetable Soup."  We identified all the vegetables in the story and listed ones that we did like and didn't like.  We then listed ingredients to make our own soup.  There are some crazy ingredients that went into our soup.  I am not sure if I would eat the soup that has hot dogs, mac n' cheese, hot sauce, amen Noodles and ketchup mixed in with it.  :)

Buddy got stuck playing with our chains!

We learned about another Holiday that takes place in December besides Christmas:  Hannukah.  They learned what a driedel is, how to play it and also the "Little Driedel" song.  Here they are using their watercolors to decorate their own driedel.

One of our themed days in December was: Snowy Day.   We read stories and listed things that we can do out in the snow.  One of our stories was about a snowflake who wanted to to ice skating.  I asked if they have ever been ice skating and only a few of them said yes.  I told them we were going to go ice skating in our room.  They all gave me funny looks when I brought out the paper plates.  Once the figured out what the plates were for they had a blast!  Some of them started to do some tricks!

One of our letters of the week was the letter Nn.  We made a night time Nn.

Another reading story for the month of December was: Pandas.  We learned about Pandas.  We learned that Pandas are not considered bears.  They are considered to be part of the raccoon family.
Here is a chart that we did - before we read the story I asked them what they know about Pandas.  We circled what was mentioned in the story, crossed off what was not true about them and underlined the ones that we figured out based on the pictures in the book.

In Math we have been working with identifying numbers that are less/more than.  Here they are playing a math game.  Each student got a dice and rolled it.  They identified the number and then placed it on the correct side.  If they had the number that was more than it went on the more than side and vice versa for the less than number.

One of our sight words was the word:  she.  They had to list a person who was considered a she.  They then came up and wrote the sight word underneath.  In their journals they had to cut out 4 pictures from magazines that could be used for the sight word: she.  (They had to cut out four pictures of a girl).

Another letter we learned was the letter; Bb.  After identifying and find Bb words we made something that started with Bb.  I started to draw it on the board - they had to copy it.  They then guessed what it was and it was a butterfly!  They wrote: Bb   butterfly   on the paper.

Another themed day we did was: Gingerbread Man.   We read 2 stories about the  "The Gingerbread Man." We compared and contrasted the two stories in the book. by using a Venn Diagram.  One of the activities we did was decorate our own gingerbread.  They got to choose the frosting and then started decorating!

One of our Christmas crafts we did.  Kindergarten elves.

Name snowflakes.  We talked about how each snowflake is different from each other, just like people.  They got to decorate their snowflakes however they wanted to.

Another Christmas craft:  Patterned candy canes.

We also had a Polar Express day/Pajama Day!!  In order to come to our Kindergarten Express (our green carpet)  they needed to have their ticket and get it punched to hop on!
To go along with our day we also made some homemade hot chocolate!  Yummy!!

When we came back from recess we all had something at our desk.  In the story "The Polar Express" the little boy asked for a bell from Santa's sleigh for the first gift.   Our elf Buddy came back with gifts for each one of the Kindergartners: a bell from Santa's sleigh!  They were so excited that they could hear the bell.  They all still believe!!  Thanks Buddy!

The Kindergarten class on our "Grinch Day."

We talked about why the Grinch should be happy.  Christmas is a time to be happy right?  We listed reasons why he should be happy.

We made a Grinch craft to go with our Grinch writing.

Since the Grinch does not like Christmas and wants to take Christmas away from the Whoo's.  We made some Grinch dust so he doesn't take our Christmas away.  The Grinch is a mean man who does not like sweet or love dovey things.   We made our dust with a cup of something sweet (sugar) added 3 drops of joy (yellow food coloring) and 3 drops of love (blue food coloring).  We closed our bags and then mixed it up by giving it 'hand hugs.'  These are all things that the Grinch does not like!

Here is the saying that we attached to our bags.

After making our Grinch dust, we talked about how to make the Grinch grin.  We listed on ways we could make him grin.

Our Kindergarten gift exchange!

I hope every one had a Merry Merry Christmas!!
