Each one of us are unique....

"Each one of us are unique, but when we come together the picture is complete."

This is a great quote from one of my many favorite books The Crayon Box that Talked.   This week we learned about having helping hands, bullies, being a good friend and MLK Jr.  They all tied into together to show how we can continue doing Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream.

We started off the week by learning what helping hands are.  We listed ways that we can have helping hands.

Meet Billy the Bully!  After we read some books about bullies - we listed some things that Billy the Bully would do.  We also talked about what to do if a bully is bothering you or someone else.

Working on some sight word work.

One of our amazing words this week was: tangled.   We read a story about a lion and a mouse where the lion got all tangled up in something.   To help us better know what the word means - we tangled up some things in our box with some string.

Our bugs.  We talked about some things that 'bug' us and how we can deal with it.  On the bugs we wrote one thing that really bugs us.

An activity that went with our book:  The Crayon Box that Talked.  I told them to get out a black crayon and that was the only crayon we could use.  They had to copy the picture that I drew on the board.  Afterwards I asked them what the picture looked like to them - I got as a response:  dark, boring, black, very black.
We then read our story.  After reading our story we drew the same picture, but with all the colors that we had.   We compared the two pictures and I asked them which one do they like better - of course they said the one with lots of colors.  The moral of this lesson is that when people of all colors come together things become a lot better than just one color.  Our picture is complete when you use all different colors.

In Social Studies we talked about leaders and what makes a good leader.

Sight word puzzle spelling.

Along with Billy the Bully we met Freddy the Friend!

Center work

Doing some journal work with some more amazing words.  They had to draw an animal that can snarl and nibble.

Sight word center work.

Journal work with our amazing words.

Our Bug chart that went along with our bug crafts we made.

Doing some more tangling of our items.

To go with MLK Jr. we did another activity that I love to do.  I had two eggs - a brown one and a white egg.  I asked them how they are different and what would happen if I cracked them - would they be the same?  I really stressed that they are different colors on the outside - so are they really going to be the same on the inside?

After cracking one egg (the white one)- we discussed what it looked like.  Then we cracked the other (the brown egg) and guess what ...it was the same!! We learned that we all look different on the outside but in the inside we are all the same.

Here are our Martin Luther King Jr. craft we did.

Another picture of our bugs.

Here are some drawings that we read with our story - the all black drawing as well as some with all colors.

Merry Christmas!!!

Wow has December come and gone!
Here is what we did during the last week before Christmas Break!
It was very busy so I am sorry ahead of time not being able to capture all those moments.
We had a theme for each day during our Christmas Week.
Monday - Gingerbread Man day
Tuesday - Polar Express Day & Pajama Day!
Wednesday - Snowy Day
Thursday - Grinch Day

Here are the Kinder elves for the elementary Christmas concert.

Here is some sight word work we did.

Sorting out our vowels.

We listed some adjectives that describe our gingerbread men.

Decorating our own gingerbread men cookies!

On Tuesday it was our Polar Express day and also PAJAMA DAY! Yes even I love pajama day!
When we came back from recess, Buddy our elf brought all the kinders a present from Santa...it was a bell from his sleigh - just like in the story!  Of course we had to ring it to make sure we could hear it.

To go with our Polar Express day - we made homemade hot chocolate! It was yummy!

We wrote some adjectives about our hot chocolate.

We also learned how to put words in ABC order.

Our presents all wrapped up to go home for our parents.

On Grinch Day we made Grinch Dust to make sure that the sneaky Grinch stays away from our houses on Christmas Eve.
To make Grinch Dust you need one cup of something sweet, two drops of joy and two drops of love.  Once it is all in your bag, you need to close it and give it lots of hugs to mix all the ingredients together.
The Grinch hates all things sweet, lovely, joyful and especially hugs! It will definitely keep him away Christmas Eve night.

Here is one of our games we played at our party.  They had to try to hook as many candy canes as they can without using their hands.   Our teacher's aide, Skylar even stayed and joined in on the fun!

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  I cannot wait to see what 2017 has in store for us Kinders!
