Hats off to you Seuss!

What a fun filled week!  This week we celebrated Reading Across America by doing a unit about Dr. Seuss!
This week was fun, exhausting, filled with lots of activities that I don't know where to start!!

This week we learned a new letter, Vv.  We also introduced a new color - gray, shape - star and number 8.  We will continue to review our color, shape and number until mid March.

We first got to know our letter Vv and the sound that it makes.  We found pictures and items that had the same sound of Vv.  Our craft for our letter Vv was a vase made out of a Vv.

Vv is for Vase

I introduced Dr. Seuss by reading the famous book, 'The Cat in the Hat'.  They all knew the cat was! :)
We played a game Doctor, Doctor, Seuss (Duck, Duck, Goose).  When I told them the name of the game, I said, 'Doctor, Doctor, Seuss" a few of them shouted we are playing duck, duck, goose!!  They much really love that game!

Our craft for the day was to make a simple Cat in the Hat craft.  They had to make the patterns with the hat, I had an example made and they had to copy my pattern.  They did very well.  Here are some pictures of our Cat in Hat.

This one was one of my favorites because she added whiskers.  She said that on the book the cat looks like he has whiskers!  :)

Wednesday was our "Faboulous Friday."   I will say this morning they wore me out, but it was all worth it to see the smiles on their faces!  I love my job!

We started off right away in the morning learning and writing our new letter and practicing drawing our shape for the week.  I wanted to get most of our 'worksheets' (oh how I dislike that word) done so we could do our fun activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss!
After our work was done, I suprised the kids by putting on my Cat in the Hat hat and telling them they get to make a hat and wear it!

Love her face!  Her story was very intense! :)

Preschool Class: Dr.Seuss day, 2013.

The fun did not stop there, we read the 'Foot Book' by Dr. Seuss.  While reading we found rhyming words and counted the feet.
After the book was done, I asked them to take off their shoes.  I wish I would have taken a picture after I said that, their faces were PRICELESS!
"Miss Jansen are you serious?', "We can't take off our shoes,"  "We will get in trouble!"  "It's bad if we take off our shoes at school."  Those were some of the remarks that I got after I said it.  You never know what to expect to happen in preschool.  We counted all the feet in our preschool room and there were 24, just like in the story!

The reason I had them take off their shoes was for our game.  We put their shoes in one pile on one side of the room and they were on the other side.  When I said go they had to go get both of their shoes and go back to where they started!  Oh my!  We did this game for almost 15 mintues!! Here are some pictures!

When we were done with the game, we laid out all our shoes in a line to see how long it would be.

I then laid them out next to the shoes to see how many preschoolers it take to be as long as the shoes.  It took 4 preschoolers to be as long as our shoe line.  I used all of the preschoolers so they all got to do it, so our preschool line is longer than our shoe line.  :)

Onto our FINAL surprise that I had up my sleeve for them!   Since it will be Dr. Seuss's birthday on Saturday, you can not celebrate a birthday without a birthday cake!!! I baked and decorated a birthday cake for the preschoolers!

Happy birthday Dr. Seuss!!!!!!

Dental Health

This past week the preschoolers have been super busy!  We just finished up a dental health unit. We learned how important it is to make sure we brush our teeth and keep them clean to even going to see the dentist!   Our letter of the week was of couse the letter Tt, which fit perfect with out theme.  So our course we had to make teeth!!  We watercolored our letter Tt and then made a tooth by gluing cotton balls on to it.

I not only introduced them the proper way to brush and the importance, we even learned about floss!  They at first thought it was odd to put a 'string' in between their teeth, but once they got to see what the string does, they loved it!  What better way to see what floss actually does is to floss playdough out of blocks!  I told them the playdough was our breakfast we just ate and then showed them what our toothbrush does.  I brushed the block with a toothbrush and some of our playdough was coming off, which then led to why we use floss.

L.H. show how much food he got!

Our experiment for Wednesday fun!  I boiled eggs and soaked them in pop overnight.  On Wednesday I asked the preschoolers if they like juice and pop and of course I had them all telling what kinds they like and don't like, how much they can drink, how much their dads drink.  It was quite amusing.  I explained that those drinks can hurt our teeth if we don't brush.  I showed them the eggs and all I heard was 'EWW!'.  I think I got my point across!

Since our 'teeth' (eggs) were dirty, we just HAD to clean them.  This was a good way to show them visually what brushing their teeth acutally does!

There are some pictures of our dance/movement time.  They have bean bags and are dancing to our all time favorite song, 'The Gummy Bear Song!"
