Thank You Veterans!!!!

This is one of my favorite units to teach due to it hitting home for me, Veterans/Heroes.  Learning  about Veterans Day is a great way to help thank all those heroes who have served for our country and who are currently serving for our country and freedom.
This week we also learned what being 'thankful' means since Thanksgiving is coming up and we are also thankful for our Veterans.  After reading a story about being thankful we listed some things that we are thankful for.

One of our Veterans Day crafts.

The Kindergartners singing at our Veterans program!  They did an amazing job!

We learned about Soldiers/Veterans, the types of soldiers and what they did/do for us.

To incorporate in with our handwriting they had to think of something to thank a soldier for.  I gave them some examples on what to say and then after that they started listing some good reasons why we should say thanks to our soldiers/Veterans.   We attached our writing to our soldiers.

I said earlier that this unit really hits home because my husband is a Veteran.  He was in the Army for 8 years and did two tours overseas.  He really helps out with teaching this unit because I get to use some of his Army items to show the Kindergartners what they all use.  This year he surprised us all and came in to talk about all of his items (he does such a better job at explaining everything :) ).  The Kindergartners were very excited and they had TONS of questions about everything for him to answer.  Here are some pictures of him showing them his items and some Kindergartners trying some items on.

Thank you to all the Veterans and soldiers who fought and are currently fighting for our country!  Words will never describe how thankful we all are for your time and sacrifices you have had to make! Thank you again!

Here we are working on some word work by using letters and building our sight words.

Let's blend in!

I recently looked at my blog and realized I haven't posted since Halloween!! AHH!  I looked through my camera and had two weeks of things we did in the Kindergarten.  So here I am getting caught up on two weeks of work that we have been doing in Kindergarten.  I apologize for getting behind!

This week the Kindergartners have been 'moving' around a lot!  In Social Studies we have been learning about things that move and help us get from place to place.  They each got a magazine and had to find 3 pictures of things that 'move.'  They glued them onto our big classroom chart.

One of our sight words this week as: my.  Our sight word poem was: My Toys.  I had their name listed on the chart and they had to come up with one of their toys that they have at home.  They had to write the sight word 'my' on the chart and then I wrote the name of their toy on their line.  We went through the chart asking whose toy it was and they had to say, "that is MY toy!"
They went and grabbed their journals, wrote down my (toy) and then had to draw a picture of their toy in their journals.

Working on ABC Mouse during centers.

Color word identification during centers.

Stamping out beginning sounds of words during centers.

This week in reading our stories were about animals in different places and how they blend in to stay safe.  One of the stories we read for fun was The Underpants Zoo.  It is a silly story about the animals in the zoo all wearing different types of underpants!  They each had to choose one of the animals form the story either an elephant or lion and draw/design a new pair of underpants for that animal.  They were quite creative!

We coincided our Science with reading in learning how animals stay safe by blending in.  They each got to choose an animal: rhino or zebra.  We talked about how to blend in so others can't see us as well as why animals would blend in.   They each had to color their animal any color and find a place for that animal to 'blend' in with.  Here are some of their animals.

Our letter of the week was the letter Pp.  We listed as many Pp words as we could.  We listened for Pp at the beginning, middle and end of words.

One of our Pp activities was writing some Pp words in our pot!

Math Centers:  Shape/Color Identification game

One of the numbers we learned this week was the number 4.  I told them that we are going to make a number out of ourselves then I am going to take a picture of the number to show you them.  Once they saw the picture they had to try to identify the number that they made and they made the number 4!!
